MIMETIC PRACTICE IN PUBLIC SPACE is a participatory installation at various S-Bahn stations of the Munich core route. Based on questions regarding ‘public corporeality’, it examines mimetic movement strategies of the public space and makes them visible. The installation questions the specific behaviours and movements of all people who use the S-Bahn stations as transit and waiting places and thus contribute to a constantly changing ‘organisation of the place’. Passers-by are invited to try out a total of 67 movement suggestions located on the walls and pillars of the train stations and in this way explore various physical imitation processes in public space as well as their own behavioural patterns. The artist and choreographer Lena Grossmann examines in the project different dimensions of ‘public corporeality’. Questions regarding a collective, corporeal capacity to communicate, organizing our social public spaces are central. What behaviour patterns and codes do we employ naturally? How do we behave individually and collectively in public space? In what way do we take up and imitate movements in our environment? What are our individual and collective needs for distance? And which role does the relationship between architecture and body movement or the treatment of everyday objects play within public space? These questions are made tangible in the form of movement suggestions located on the walls and pillars of the S-Bahn stations. They are based both on existing movement strategies observed at the respective locations and on movements developed specifically for the locations. Thus, forms of imitation such as empaphy, repetition, simultaneous imitation, symbiotic behaviour, connection of imagination and movement become present in this specific public environment.
